Dedication of the 5 th Marine Cemetery at Iwo. Four thousand Marines and Seabee gave their lives for the dirty little eight square miles called Iwo Jima. Most of the Seahees killed at Iwo are buried in this cemetery.

The first flag atop Mt. Suribachi. The flag in the famous picture made by AP Photographer Joe Rosenthal was the second flag on the blood-soaked volcano.

A typical Seabee camp. The 9th Battalion, veterans of a year in Iceland, built and occupied this camp on Tinian before moving on to Okinawa. Note the theater, warehouses, and machine shops, as well as the quonset quarters of the men.
